Fact Box

  • On August 8, 2022, the FBI conducted a raid of President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago property in Palm Beach, Florida. The FBI and Department of Justice initially declined to comment, but on August 11, Attorney General Merrick Garland confirmed he “personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant” of Trump’s home.
  • The search warrant revealed federal agents were instructed to seize “all physical documents and records constituting evidence, contraband, fruits of crime, or other items illegally possessed.” The affidavit explaining the need for the search warrant has yet to be released for public viewing as DOJ officials say it should remain sealed 'to protect the integrity of an ongoing law enforcement investigation that implicates national security.'
  • In statements President Trump released to White House reporters and Just the News on August 12, he said documents the FBI seized were already “declassified” and “the power to classify and declassify documents rests solely with the President of the United States. The idea that some paper-pushing bureaucrat, with classification authority delegated BY THE PRESIDENT, needs to approve of declassification is absurd.”
  • On the day of the raid, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis tweeted, “The raid of [Mar-a-Lago] is another escalation in the weaponization of federal agencies against the Regime’s political opponents [...]. Now the Regime is getting another 87k IRS agents to wield against its adversaries? Banana Republic.”

Prior to searching Former President Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence, the FBI obtained a search warrant from a judge. This means a non-partisan judicial official looked over the facts presented by the FBI and decided they did indeed need to raid the premises. Any judge would know that this high-profile raid would need to clear an exceptionally high bar of being necessary for the raid to be accepted in the court of public opinion; meaning, the request would have received extra scrutiny to ensure it was impartial. The notion that this was somehow a Democratic deep state conspiracy is even further debunked as the head of the FBI, Christopher Wray, was a Trump appointee.

If this were some politically motivated move by Trump's enemies, he would be able to prove it by simply releasing the search warrant or publicly disclosing what was taken. The fact that Trump and his team didn't immediately release the search warrant shows that he did not want the public to know why his home was searched. This runs counter to his narrative that the raid was politically motivated, which could be easily proven if the warrant wasn't likely full of serious allegations. In a typical Trumpian move to muddy the waters and confuse the public, he has taken to demanding the FBI release the warrant, something he and his team could do at any time.

Finally, the FBI found some of the things they were looking for that were later seized. This shows that an investigation had solid evidence that Trump was in possession of certain documents, validating the need to obtain a search and seizure warrant. This isn't a witch hunt; it's what effective justice looks like.

The FBI has demonstrated they will target and attack Trump for political purposes, such as when they conspired to illegally and unconstitutionally spy on his campaign. Not only was the FBI Mar-a-Lago raid a political stunt, but it also violated the fundamental rights of former President Trump. This is perhaps the biggest and most unprecedented of the many 'witch hunts' against Trump, potentially even rising to the level of 'prosecutorial misconduct.' From the Steele Dossier to the unfounded Russia collusion accusations, it is clear their attacks lack any sort of credible or tangible evidence.

Trump's voter support has reached new heights immediately following this unfair, political stunt. Even the highly biased and liberal Washington Post deleted a tweet acknowledging the raid was politically motivated, showing they know the truth. Still, they are not allowed to express it so the raid appears above board. In support of Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis stated that agencies like the FBI are 'being weaponized' to destroy people they simply do not like, adopting false conspiracy theories

It is important to note that Trump's legal team was already in contact with the federal government before the raid. Trump's attorney says that they had an 'open door' policy with the feds, demonstrating even further that this was nothing more than a cheap political stunt intended to sway the results of the 2024 election in Biden's favor. Trump himself says it is all part of an ongoing coordinated attack by Democrats.

When agencies like the FBI become politicized, we all lose. This attack on Trump is an attack on freedom and American values themselves and brings us one step closer to an authoritarian dystopia where even the president's rights don't matter.
